Mary Halvorson Obituary

Mary Olive Halvorson, age 88, of Barron, WI & former teacher in the Kohler School System died Sunday, December 4th, 2016 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. She was born September 8th, 1928 to William & Rena (Erickson) Halvorson in Rice Lake. She attended the Halvorson Homestead Elementary School & graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1946. She later attended Barron County Normal School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1955 with a B.S. degree in education. She continued her education ultimately receiving a M.S. degree in education in 1969. Her teaching career included positions in Woodside School in rural Barron County, Oronto, Kohler & Barron, WI schools. She retired in 1986 after a career of 37 years. Mary was a life-long member of the Canton United Methodist Church & held many positions in the church & UMW organizations. She was an active member of the Barron County Retired Educators & a life member of Wisconsin Retired Educators Association. She was a member of the Barron County Historical Society, serving as secretary for 17 years & chairing the Junior Historical Society for many years. She was also a long-time supporter of the Barron County Humane Society.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother: Merlin Halvorson & sister: Ellen Martin. She is survived by her nephew: William (Sharon) Halvorson of Stacy, MN, great-niece: Anna Halvorson, sister-in-law: Gladys Halvorson of Rice Lake, as well as many cousins, other relatives & friends.

Funeral Service

Funeral services will be (were) held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 9th at Canton United Methodist Church with Rev. Kyochul Shin officiating & interment following in Pioneer Rest Cemetery in the Town of Sumner, rural Canton. Visitation will be (was) held for the hour prior to services at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Barron County Historical Society, the Barron County Humane Society or the Canton United Methodist Church. Arrangements are with Rausch-Lundeen Funeral Homes, Cameron & Dallas.
